PAL - Positive About Literacies

PAL – Positive About Literacies is an Adult Literacy and Numeracy(ALN) service aimed at helping local residents to improve their skills wilth reading, writing and numbers. PAL is delivered by a team of experienced literacy and numeracy staff in a variety of community-based locations throughout the East End.

We provide literacies support using the social practices model that says that literacy is more than the acquisition of skills but the application of reading, writing, discussion and numbers to everyday tasks.

We work with people living in the East End of Glasgow who want to improve their literacies to make changes in their lives and deliver a range of activities including:

  • Reading - promoting the membership and use of Glasgow Libraries, accessing books for beginner readers, using newspapers as learning resources
  • Writing - providing scribing of or recording of life stories, using video to stimulate writing, assistance with work-related writing tasks
  • Discussion – using articles, video, newspapers, to promote decision making and social investigation Numeracy - developing basic skills, help your kids with their homework
  • Numbers – helping parents with homework issues, looking at issues of finance, credit and everyday calculations

PAL are happy to deliver awareness training sessions to highlight the issues of Adult Literacy and Numeracy to community groups and organisations throughout the East End – we can do this in a number of formats from short inputs at team meetings to half day training events aimed at those working with different client groups in the area.
